An Empress in black trousers and sneakers waits for the bus, plastic bags hanging from her hands. Just behind her heel, an snail rests on the pavement — completely at the mercy of her next movement. When she shifts her foot, her sole comes down over it. The snailcrushes instantly beneath the pressure, breaking apart under her sneaker. She notices the mess with irritation and flicks the remains away with the side of her foot. Then she settles back into place, continuing to wait for the bus as if the moment meant nothing at all.
